The Virgin Diet - Day 1

Yes I am a dietitian.

But my husband is not. And as anyone with any kind of human service job knows, you cannot help family and friends. So when Andrew saw the WGBH infomercial for JJ Virgin's Diet Challenge and then said, "Hey that sounds like something I should try", I agreed immediately. Well after I stopped rolling my eyes and pretending to strangle him behind his back. Being the supportive wife I am, I decided to play along.

So far I have read only a fraction of the book (the recipes) and agree that cutting out all the CRAP that most Americans (and Andrew) eat on a daily basis is a good idea. According to the plan, every morning should start off with a breakfast shake consisting of her (of course) brand of vegan protein powder, freshly crushed flax seed, frozen organic berries, kale and unsweetened coconut milk. We used vegan protein powder from Whole Foods (yes, it was as expensive as it sounds) and a bag of finely crushed flax seed because A) I couldn't find actual flax seeds and B) I have nothing to grind them with at home. This morning I dutifully made two breakfast shakes that had the consistency and appearance (and taste!) of sludge the day after a big snowstorm. I drank 1/3 and tossed the rest. Andrew choked down the whole thing, bless his soul.

Lunch and dinner were decidedly better. Being real food and all. Lunch was salad with chicken and avocado. Dinner was quinoa pasta with a turkey meat sauce and salad. I will say I didn't feel the need to take a nap after lunch but that may have been sheer happiness at finally eating. By 7:30 at night, I was in the full throws of caffeine withdrawal. I ended up taking 3 Advil and going to bed.

Let's see how day 2 goes.
